REFLECTING WHO
WE ARE…

Our Legacy Campaign has transformed our campus, transformed learning spaces, and established the foundation for not only the seriousness of purpose of our educational vision, but also the places our students need to exchange ideas and smiles.

Building Forward

From its beginnings in Salem, Virginia, as a grassroots elementary school to its evolution as the Valley’s only accredited independent college preparatory school, North Cross has consistently forged new paths within the Roanoke Valley’s educational landscape from the very first day it opened its doors in 1944.

Under the passionate leadership of dedicated individuals, North Cross has enjoyed a rich history of thoughtful and creative problem solvers.
Since its inception, our community has shared in our ingenuity and has offered their generous support time and time again. Building on this strong foundation, we now aim to bring North Cross into a new era, creating a new legacy for generations to follow: we will reimagine the campus to further promote our excellence in teaching and better encourage our students’ persistence, empathy and creative thinking—characteristics our global economy requires of its future leaders.

With this campaign, we will break new ground on the path forged 75 years ago to honor the legacy of those pioneering individuals who championed North Cross at its very beginnings—those who saw the necessity and benefit that only an independent education can provide to our children.

A Campus Reimagined

The summit of a student’s journey at North Cross, the Upper School represents the finish line for our college preparatory program. New science labs replace the outdated, outmoded and under-equipped spaces we currently have. In addition, a Design Lab will allow open space for students to not only problem solve, but “problem find” through open collaboration, experimentation and the space that not only allows for but supports exploration. More and varying sizes of classrooms support small seminars and larger lectures while making room for growth in enrollment.

A Learning Space for All

The newly imagined library, built to support today’s technology and access to information while still offering our younger students a place to discover a love of reading, lies adjacent to Willis Hall, as does the student commons—the living room of North Cross—and our CrossWalk classrooms for students with learning differences. Beyond that, an expanded theatre and auditorium with a deepened stage, state-of-the-art lighting and acoustics, and added capacity.

The Spaces Beyond

This connectivity is at the core of the directive our faculty and stakeholders put forward when the initial planning began. In order for our students to thrive academically and personally, North Cross needs to have a campus that fosters a sense of trust and community, the exchange of ideas, and promotes lasting relationships between faculty and students and between students from different divisions.
